New Year’s Morning

Only a night from old to new!

Only a night, and so much wrought!

The Old Year's heart all weary grew,

But said: "The New Year rest has brought."

The Old Year's hopes its heart laid down,

As in a grave; but, trusting, said:

"The blossoms of the New Year's crown

Bloom from the ashes of the dead."

The Old Year's heart was full of greed;

With selfishness it longed and ached,

And cried: "I have not half I need.

My thirst is bitter and unslaked.

But to the New Year's generous hand

All gifts in plenty shall return;

True love it shall understand;

By all my failures it shall learn.

I have been reckless; it shall be

Quiet and calm and pure of life.

I was a slave; it shall go free,

And find sweet peace where I leave strife."

Only a night from old to new!

Never a night such changes brought.

The Old Year had its work to do;

No New Year miracles are wrought.

Always a night from old to new!

Night and the healing balm of sleep!

Each morn is New Year's morn come true,

Morn of a festival to keep.

All nights are sacred nights to make

Confession and resolve and prayer;

All days are sacred days to wake

New gladness in the sunny air.

Only a night from old to new;

Only a sleep from night to morn.

The new is but the old come true;

Each sunrise sees a new year born.

Spellbound

The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me
And I cannot, cannot go.

The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow.
And the storm is fast descending,
And yet I cannot go.

Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me;
I will not, cannot go.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.

Silvester

Daß bald das neue Jahr beginnt,
spür ich nicht im geringsten.
Ich merke nur: Die Zeit verrinnt
genauso wie zu Pfingsten.

Die Zeit verrinnt. Die Spinne spinnt
in heimlichen Geweben.
Wenn heute nacht ein Jahr beginnt,
beginnt ein neues Leben.

Joachim Ringelnatz, 1883-1934

The Year

What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That’s not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.

We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.

We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides, we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that’s the burden of the year.

Silvester

Was fange ich Silvester an?
Geh ich in Frack und meinen kessen
Blausanen Strümpfen zu dem Essen,
Das Herrn Generaldirektor gibt?
Wo man heut nur beim Tanzen schiebt?
Die Hausfrau dehnt sich wild im Sessel -
Der Hausherr tut das sonst bei Dressel -,
Das junge Volk verdrückt sich bald.
Der Sekt ist warm. Der Kaffee kalt -
Prost Neujahr!
Ach, ich armer Mann!
Was fange ich bloß Silvester an?

Wälz ich mich im Familienschoße?
Erst gibt es Hecht mit süßer Sauce,
Dann gibt's Gelee. Dann gibt es Krach.
Der greise Männe selbst wird schwach.
Aufsteigen üble Knatschgerüche.
Der Hans knutscht Minna in der Küche.
Um zwölf steht Rührung auf der Uhr.
Die Bowle -? (<Leichter Mosel>nur - )
Prost Neujahr!
Ach, ich armer Mann!
Was fange ich bloß Silvester an?

Mach ich ins Amüsiervergnügen?
Drück ich mich in den Stadtbahnzügen?
Schrei ich in einer schwulen Bar:
"Huch, Schneeballblüte! Prost Neujahr!"
Geh ich zur Firma Sklarz Geschwister -
Bleigießen? Ists ein Fladen klein:
Dies wird wohl Deutschlands Zukunft sein...
Prost Neujahr!
Helft mir armem Mann!
Was fang ich bloß Silvester an?

Song of the New Year

I heard the bells at midnight
Ring in the dawning year;
And above the clanging chorus
Of the song, I seemed to hear
A choir of mystic voices
Flinging echoes, ringing clear,
From a band of angels winging
Through the haunted atmosphere:
'Ring out the shame and sorrow,
And the misery and sin,
That the dawning of the morrow
May in peace be ushered in.'

And I thought of all the trials
The departed years had cost,
And the blooming hopes and pleasures
That are withered now and lost;
And with joy I drank the music
Staling o'er the feeling there
As the spirit song came pealing
On the silence everywhere:
'Ring out the shame and sorrow,
And the misery and sin,
That the dawning of the morrow
May in peace be ushered in.'

And I listened as a lover
To an utterance that flows
In syllables like dewdrops
From the red lips of a rose,
Till the anthem, fainter growing,
Climbing higher, chiming on
Up the rounds of happy rhyming,
Slowly vanished in the dawn:
'Ring out the shame and sorrow,
And the misery and sin,
That the dawning of the morrow
May in peace be ushered in.'

Then I raised my eyes to Heaven,
And with trembling lips I pled
For a blessing for the living
And a pardon for the dead;
And like a ghost of music
Slowly whispered--lowly sung--
Came the echo pure and holy
In the happy angel tongue:
'Ring out the shame and sorrow,
And the misery and sin,
And the dawn of every morrow
Will in peace be ushered in.'

Ein neues Buch, ein neues Jahr

Ein neues Buch, ein neues Jahr
Was werden die Tage bringen?
Wird's werden, wie es immer war,
Halb scheitern, halb gelingen?

Prost Neujahr! wird mancher sagen;
Aber mancher ohne Rrren!
Denn es gibt vergnügte Herren.
Auch ich selbst, auf meinen Wunsch,
Mache mir ein wenig Punsch. –

Wie ich nun allhier so sitze
Bei des Ofens milder Hitze,
Angetan den Rock der Ruhe
Und die schönverzierten Schuhe,
Und entlocke meiner Pfeife
Langgedehnte Wolkenstreife,
Da spricht mancher wohl entschieden:
Dieser Mensch ist recht zufrieden!
Leider muss ich, dementgegen,
Schüttelnd meinen Kopf bewegen. -
Schweigend lüfte ich das Glas.
(Ach, wie schön bekömmt mir das!) –

Sonsten wie erfreulich war es,
Wenn man so am Schluss des Jahres
Oder in des Jahres Mitten
Zum bewussten Schrein geschritten
Und in süßem Traum verloren,
Emsig den Kupon geschoren!
Aber itzo auf die Schere
Sickert eine Trauerzähre,
Währenddem der Unterkiefer
Tiefer sinkt und immer tiefer. -
Traurig leere ich das Glas
(Ach, wie schön bekömmt mir das!) –

Henriette, dieser Name
Füllt mich auch mit tiefem Grame:
Die ich einst in leichten Stoffen
Herzbeklemmend angetroffen
Nachts auf dem Kasinoballe,
Sie, die später auf dem Walle
Beim Ziewiet der Philomele
Meine unruhvolle Seele
Hoch beglückt und tief beseeligt,
Sie ist anderweit verehlicht,
Ist im Standesamtsregister
Aufnotieret als Frau Pfister,
Und es wird davon gesprochen,
Nächstens käme sie in Wochen. -
Grollend lüfte ich das Glas.
(Ach, wie schön bekömmt mir das!) –

Ganz besonders und vorzüglich
Macht es mich so mißvergnüglich,
Dass es mal nicht zu vermeiden,
Von hienieden abzuscheiden,
Dass die Denkungskraft entschwindet,
Dass man sich so tot befindet,
Und es sprechen dann die Braven:
Siehe da, er ist entschlafen.
Und sie ziehn gelind und lose
Aus der Weste oder Hose
Den geheimen Bund der Schlüssel,
Und man rührt sich auch kein bissel,
Sondern ist, obschon vorhanden,
Friedlich lächelnd einverstanden. -
Schaudernd leere ich das Glas.
(Ach, wie schön bekömmt mir das!) –

Wo wird dann die Seele weilen?
Muss sie sich in Duft zerteilen?
Oder wird das alte Streben,
Hübsche Dinge zu erleben,
Sich in neue Form ergießen,
Um zu lieben, zu genießen,
Oder in Behindrungsfällen
Sehr zu knurren und zu bellen?
Kann man, frag' ich angstbeklommen,
Da denn gar nicht hinterkommen?
Kommt, o kommt herbeigezogen,
Ihr verehrten Theologen,
Die ihr längst die ew'ge Sonne
Treu verspundet in der Tonne.
Überschüttet mich mit Klarheit! -
Doch vor allem hoff' ich Wahrheit
Von dem hohen Philosophen;
Denn nur er, beim warmen Ofen,
Als der Pfiffigste von allen,
Fängt das Licht in Mäusefallen. -
Prost Neujahr! Und noch ein Glas!
(Ei, wie schön bekömmt mir das!) –

Uh, mir wird so wohl und helle!
Himmel, Sterne, Meereswelle,
Weiße Möwen, goldne Schiffe;
Selig schwanken die Be-jiffe,
Und ich tauche in das Bette
Mit dem Seufzer: Hen-i-jette!

In Memoriam

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
    The flying cloud, the frosty light:
    The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
    Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
    The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind
    For those that here we see no more;
    Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
    And ancient forms of party strife;
    Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
    The faithless coldness of the times;
    Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
    The civic slander and the spite;
    Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
    Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
    Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
    The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
    Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Lord Alfred Tennyson, 1809-1892
